November 2006 Issue

StartLogic 3rd AnniversaryOn October 31, StartLogic celebrated its 3rd anniversary as a web site hosting provider. The celebration was combined with a Halloween party and included all StartLogic staff.

StartLogic has a lot to celebrate, according to John Raygoza, director of sales: "In three years, we have had phenomenal growth. In fact, we have gained over 30,000 accounts since March alone. Now we serve over 80,000 accounts."

Raygoza attributes this growth to StartLogic's commitment to its customers. "We give the customer the products and features they are looking for at affordable prices, and the customer service they deserve. Our motto 'Real People. Real Service. Real Savings.' is something we believe in and are committed to – and it shows."

File Transfer Protocol, or FTP for short, is the protocol for exchanging files over the Internet. FTP works in the same way as HTTP for transferring Web pages from a server to a user's browser. File Transfer Protocol is most commonly used to download a file from a server using the Internet or to upload a file to a server (e.g., uploading a Web page file to a server). There are many ways to FTP information from one location to another and in this article I will explain where to find, download, install and use FTP Client software.

We have a link to "Smart FTP" on our website. Just
click here to download the program.

After you’ve downloaded the program, go to where you saved it and double click on the file. This will ask you if you would like to run the executable file... click on yes or run. Next, go through the wizard and accept the defaults and install the "typical" setup. When the setup is complete, you will be asked if you want to run the application. Leave the checkbox selected and click on Done or Finished.

To configure Smart FTP as easily as possible, you can use the quick connect option to open Smart FTP.

You’ll need to type in your domain name where it prompts you for an address.  If your domain name does not resolve to our servers then you will have to use the temporary URL we have provided you in the account setup letter you received upon startup of the program.  You’ll also need to type in your login name and password. Make sure the port is set to 21. Click Connect.

Now click on File and select New Local Browser.  There will be two navigation panes displayed. The pane on the left is the remote server and the pane on the right is the local computer you are sitting in front of.  In the pane on the left, navigate to your server's public directory:

Prologic users = public_html
Winlogic users = wwwRoot
vps users = httpdocs

Now that you have selected the destination directory, it is time to select the files and/or folders you want to transfer over.  In the pane to the right, navigate to the files/folders you want to transfer and highlight the items you want to move. In between the two panes there are a few icons, the one we are looking for is a blue bubble with a white arrow pointing to the remote server pane.

Click on that blue bubble with a white arrow and your files/folder will begin to transfer over. The size of your content and the amount of files needing to be transferred will determine how long the transfer will take.

Congratulations! You have successfully transferred files/folders utilizing the FTP protocol and FTP client.

Regards,
Robert Commer

  Basics of Search Engine Optimization

Understanding how you can get a substantial increase in "free" website traffic through basic search engine optimization begins with the fundamentals. These recommendations assume a site does not possess any technical issues that may cause a search engine to avoid indexing it or to not index it properly. That's a topic for another article.

First, what is search engine optimization? Also known as "SEO", search engine optimization can be defined as a set of methodologies aimed at improving the visibility of a website in search engine listings.

If you have a website, no one will find it unless you promote it. Promotion opportunities for a website vary and should include both offline and online tactics. On the Internet, the most common way for users to find websites is through search engines. In fact, a recent study shows more people are using search engines than the yellow pages to find vendors.

Search engines work by "crawling" the Internet, following known links to find updated pages and new websites, saving copies along the way. The information from the saved web page text is analyzed by sophisticated algorithms that assign values for categorization and ranking. Additionally, the linking relationship of the indexed site is compared to similar sites and communities of sites.

Gas Electrical Services, Inc.
Brad Snyder, owner of Gas Electrical Services, Inc. uses his website to help his business, but its main purpose is not to generate sales or to attract new clients.   "Our website’s main purpose it to help organize our application process," he says.  This is because his company is a traveling company that works throughout the mid-west United States to construct electrical plants including those that produce ethanol, bio-diesel and CO2.

"We started our business in May of 2006 with leadership teams and we are now trying to build up our employee base," he explains.  Since they are a traveling company, they need to have a local employee base in the areas where they work and they are also trying to build up their traveling employee teams as well.  "We were doing a lot of paperwork at the worksite to recruit new employees," Snyder explains.  "Now we can talk with potential employees and direct them to the website to apply."  It works because then all the paperwork goes directly to the company’s office manager in the main office in Iowa.  "If we are working at a site in Colorado, we don’t have to keep the application papers with us until we return.  They go directly to our base office in Iowa." Since starting their website in mid-August of 2006, the website has helped increase their employee base by about thirty-percent.
