Tech Tip: Backups

In the field of information technology, backup refers to the copying of data so that these additional copies may be restored after a data loss event.

Now that you have a website and everything is setup and configured just right, making a backup of your website, and its content, is in order. This article will cover the types of backups you can create and the steps to take to perform the backup procedure.

There are two types of backups you can create from the vDeck control panel:

  1. Backup of all data files – this would be every file recursively in your /home directory (log into your vdeck > hostmanager > filemanager, you are now in the /home directory)
  2. Backup of databases – this would be a separate backup of each database

Q. So now that I know a backup can be created by me, what now???

A. The next step would be to log into the vDeck control panel > hostmanager > backups

From the backups page you can select what type of backup to create… Let’s start with backing up the data files.

The first selection on the backups page is to create a site backup. Simply enter your email address into the text box and click the backup button to the right of the text box. Depending on the size of you website and all of your data files, this may take a bit… I suggest a good stretch at this point. ;)

Once the backup has completed, you will receive an email notification and the backup will be placed in your filemanager’s /home directory with the name of <username>.tar.gz.

*Note – replace <username> with your vdeck username.

Now that this file is created, you can download the file from the server using an FTP client. I strongly suggest downloading this file. If your domain were to ever experience data loss, it wouldn’t make much sense to leave your backup copy on the server that is experiencing the data loss. Move the backup to your local machine at home.

  Keep web design simple to maximize conversion

Carleton University in Ottawa recently published a study suggesting that web visitors make an instant assessment of the overall "quality" of a web site in less than a second. This contradicts conventional wisdom that suggests you have 6-8 seconds to capture a prospect's attention. Given the ease with which Google and other search engines provide alternative web sites, this concept of "instant affinity" is critical to conversion.

Think of your last trip to the bookstore or library, did you find yourself scanning the shelves for something that "jumped out?" We rely on our brains to filter visual images in such a way that we only see items that are of interest. One can presume that something similar is happening with web sites. From just the look of a site, the brain is making a judgment without actually reading the text.

This means more than just graphic design in the sense of attractive colors, fonts and layout. This means that, at first glance, a web site must present the idea of good content. In other words, a site must look as if it has valuable information without any of the information actually being read.

Smart Vacation Rentals is not just your typical travel agency. They make the connection between property owners who want to rent out their properties and the vacationers that want to rent these properties, but they go one step further. The company’s CEO Ebony Flennoly explains how. "We provide the same special services that a resort or high-end hotel might provide, such as weddings, horseback riding, tours, private drivers and personal chefs. We just provide these amenities to them while they stay at a private location." The company is based in New York, but they handle properties in San Diego, Florida, Panama and Costa Rica.

Smart Vacation Rentals has been in business for four years and they’ve had their web site with StartLogic for about six months. "We used the StartLogic design services," Flennoly explained. "It was such a great experience because the designer and I put our ideas together and we came up with a really great site." She especially likes the efficiency of the service and the finished product. "The designer also made suggestions to help me with my business," she explains. "We now have a PayPal connection that he suggested. The clients like it because they prefer to use an established program when they are making electronic payments."
